Semantic HTML provides meaning outside of presentation
As web designers it is easy for us to get distracted by what I think of as “the shiny”—how things look on the page. But the true purpose of a web page is communication in some form or another. And semantic HTML tags provide us with a way to add to that communication from within the HTML that we are building our pages with. Semantic HTML tags provide meaning to the content they define, not just a hook for styles to define how it will look.
