I don't recommend using self-signed certificates for https secure pages, but that doesn't mean that you need to go out and break the bank trying to find a good CA (certificate authority). There are some free ones and a few very reasonably priced ones, including two providers that offer extended validation (the green URL bar information). Find out which are the cheapest SSL certificates and which ones are worth the money.
