What Is Search Engine Optimization? |
In most cases, the purpose of a website is to make information accessible to people, but since most people find information using a search engine, a website that does not rank highly in its index is not likely to get many visitors. Visibility in search engines is especially critical to companies that use their online presence to sell products or services. Indeed, search engine optimization is necessary to a successful website.
The most common error developers or designers make is not incorporating search engine optimization into the initial design of the website. Trying to optimize a website after it has been designed is difficult and sometimes it is easier to redo the entire design from scratch. This is because a large part of optimization is done with the HTML tags and the textual content of the page. Rather than regarding search engine optimization as an afterthought, it should be the guiding element of design, at least from a business perspective.
Optimization is usually done by correctly using the Meta and Heading tags in HTML, and writing content with the right keyword density. Aside from optimizing the site’s code and content, linking is also an important strategy. Common search engines interpret the number of external sites linking to a website as an indication of importance. That is why the more links from other sites pointing towards your website, the higher the chances of that your site will be placed higher on the search engine’s index. Be prepared for a lot of work, as asking for reciprocal links from other sites can be tedious work.
There are other, more immediate ways to increase traffic, such as advertising or buying links in directories. But for the long-term and serious traffic, only search engine optimization will do. What’s more it’s free and only a bit of patience is required. |
